What a brilliant quote “”If you need to be right before you move, you will never win”.
Michael Ryan, (WHO Health Emergencies Programme) gives a very direct response on how to react to epidemics/ pandemics. Little does he realise that his reply to a question on Ebola not only relates to health but also to how we, the technical and ACM communities, should respond to situations like the current one we face.
His sentiment is that if you need to respond to an emergency, you need to act fast, “speed trumps perfection”, you need to respond and respond quickly.
This is tied in tightly to comments about our current blame culture, and how this approach makes organisations scared of acting too quickly for fear of reprisals. In recent weeks this has become incredibly clear. Organisations are desperate to get solutions in place, but at worried about getting flak for having made the wrong decision in the heat of the moment. Hindsight is an amazingly powerful tool/ Right? And this fear of reprisal, really is leaving some organisations out to dry.
I’m not going to pick out any more quotes from him because the clip is full of them, but it is full of lessons that we should apply in business when faced with events like we are now, and arguably, less catastrophic ones too . As the world becomes more heavily populated and climates change, I dare say that this will not be the last pandemic we experience, so how will we react to the next one. I hope we all learn to move past the blame culture and in to a period of moving with the new. it is just another change people, and one thing we know for sure… Change is constant!
